Stop Procrastination and Apply Time Management Strategies

Procrastination is the act of postponing doing a project or task until another time. Time management is the exercise of certain procedures in order to accomplish goals or complete tasks or projects on a timely basis.
How do you know if you are a procrastinator? If you continually use excuses to postpone things that need to be done, if you do not get projects done on time, if you are constantly running behind schedule, then you are probably a procrastinator.
How do you stop procrastination? You need to establish a time management plan for yourself. Set specific times to do specific job tasks and allow precise time to do each task. Do not let yourself make excuses to avoid sticking to your plan.
One way to make sure you can overcome procrastination is to make a habit of getting things done. It takes 21 days to form a habit. It has been said that if you practice doing a new activity for 21 days it will become a habit.
What worked for me is that I kept track of what I did each day from the time I woke up in the morning until I went to bed at night. I did this for a couple of days. I was surprised to find out how much time was wasted doing nothing.
Set priorities for yourself. The best way to get organized is to make a list of the tasks that need to be done from most important to least important. Set a time or time period to do each task so each task gets done. Start with the daily tasks that need to be done. Do these before doing activities that are more distracting, like answering e-mail, checking in on the social media sites, making telephone calls or listing to voice mails.
Once you get your daily activities prioritized, you can then begin to start setting into motion those same management skills you are developing and apply them to task that need to be done monthly, quarterly or yearly. Make sure that you plan some flexibility into your schedule should a sudden change in plans occur.
The next step is to step up and do the work. Do not let yourself procrastinate with the tasks at hand. Remember, we are doing time management so do not let procrastination steal valuable time from you.
Staying motivated to continue working at the pace you have set for yourself is not always easy. It is up to you to keep that motivation going. What I have found to help is to keep track of what I have already accomplished and I feel better by knowing I have achieved my goals.
Having effective time management will improve your personal life not only be relieving stress, but also will have an overall positive effect on your health. When you put time management strategies into action, it will have a positive impact on your business. When it comes to running your business, time management becomes all the critical and demanding.
Be realistic, you are never going to get more than 24 hours in a day, so managing your time better is what you need to do.
Time management strategies are useful for everyone in both their personal lives and in their businesses if they want to succeed. A nonchalant attitude will not get you the achievement you are striving for.

End Procrastination and Start Taking Action

Procrastination is a dangerous disease. It should be curbed at the earliest before it becomes chronic. Here is a list of strategies for overcoming procrastination. Try them out one at a time. See which one works best for you and use it most of the time whenever you feel like procrastinating.

Help with Procrastination

1. Start with the tough stuff – Follow this rule to break out of your procrastination habit. Start your day with the most difficult task. Once that is out of the way, a lot of pressure will ease off from your shoulders.

Check your to-do list. Then pick up the most difficult and uncomfortable work which you are prone to put off. Tackle this work first up in the day.

2. Break down and conquer – You cannot eat the whole elephant at once. But you can eat it one bite at a time. Similarly, you can conquer difficult tasks by breaking them down.

Take any complex task and chunk it down into manageable steps. Each step should not take you more than 30 minutes to complete. If it does, that means you have to break this step into further steps.

3. Review your day – At the end of each day, spend around 15 or 20 minutes reviewing how your day went. Check your to-do list and see which tasks were finished satisfactorily and which ones were not. Try to find reasons why these tasks were not finished.

If the reason why you could not complete an activity is beyond your control then forget about it. Otherwise, make up your mind not to repeat this in the future.

4. Finish what you start – This is an important strategy for overcoming procrastination. Many times we are guilty of leaving things in the middle without finishing them fully. They can cause frustration to us. Our minds may go back to these tasks continually, thus disturbing us.

So get into the habit of finishing whatever projects or tasks you begin. Don’t quit in the middle unless absolutely necessary.

5. Remove distractions – Whenever you are working, you should be far removed from distractions and disturbing things. Multi-tasking is bad and you should avoid it. Focus only on one thing at a time.

Remove yourself from other distractions. Don’t let anyone disturb you for the time you have set aside. Put your attention totally on the task you have at hand.

Long time ago I have bought a book on how to stop procrastination, I could never make myself finish the damn thing, much less apply the ideas.

The author probably would tell me, “You are a severe case”.

I have listened to countless audios around the subject… Today I look back and ask myself, “why these people like to complicate so much?”

Simple answer: Their egos and their greed.

The more stupid and hopeless they make you feel the longer you are going to depend on their non-sense.
They are life suckers… But not, not yours anymore.

You will want to kick yourself when you finally find out how little it does take to kick the the
procrastination habit out of your life forever.

Procrastination has very little to do with psychological-waste-my-time-beating-around-the-bush garbage that everybody is talking about.

If all you want is to feel good, by masking the true reason why you have been putting off everything and your life, then all you got do is keep listening to those suckers.

Now, if you really want to resolve and learn how stop procrastination for good, please come closer, listen to what I am going to reveal to you here and now.

You will just need to use a little common sense to realize that you postpone because you are not physically, emotionally, mentally and/or spiritually ready to do it… there is nothing to do with all that psycho-babble, does it?

You will not learn how to stop procrastination by reading books, listening to audios, going to seminars or even reading this article.

Obviously, you will need to take action, better yet, laser-focused action. Action requires a body that is ready for action and accompanied with a constant joyfull mental state.

Okay, Idalino, but how can I get that? Simple, you spend more than 20 years to figure it out or your own (like what happened to me) or a better option would be to hire a skillful health and lifestyle coach to make it happen in months instead.

You know how much your procrastination habit has robbed from you. How many wonderful and gratifying opportunities, moments and relashionships passed you by and will never show up again? Worse, you did not even notice what flew by you.

How much pain have you suffered unnecessarily? For how long have you been living way below your potential because you can’t get aroung to doing it?

Imagine how much more you could be and do if would be able to tackle any task from now on, even when it is uncomfortable or outside your comfort zone. You would just do it anyway, as long as it was necessary to bring you closer to your purpose and burning desires.

Please stop reading and get into massive action now, to change the way you feel physically and everything else, will just fall into place.

How To Prevent Procrastination

We all have a tendency to put things off for various reasons and believe me, I’ve been the master of this one in the past. Understanding why you procrastinate helps you to do something about it.

How often have you made yourself ‘busy’ just because you’re putting off doing something you’re resisting? Well, here are few things you can do to prevent procrastination.

When you put off a task it can start to develop almost ogre-like proportions before we’ll get round to doing it. The longer you leave it, the harder it becomes. Usually by that time, it’s become urgent or critical rather than just important.

What is the benefit of your procrastination?
What is the pay-off you get from putting something off?

It may be the easier route in the short-term but what is the long-term impact? When does procrastination have consequences on your pocket, health or emotional well-being?

If you leave it too long, the task gets to the point where it can no longer be ignored and demands your attention. Now you have to get it done – which somehow, you now find the time or inclination to do, so what was stopping you in the first place?

When the pain of not doing something becomes greater than the pain of doing it, resistance will magically disappear and more often than not we find that it wasn’t so bad as we thought after all.

To help reduce procrastination, try breaking a larger task down into smaller tasks, so it doesn’t seem quite so onerous. For instance, if you need to write a report that you think is going to take days to write – take five minutes just to get a few ideas on paper. Next time – add a bit more, refine it, add a bit more content. Schedule time to come back to it later either in a few hours or the next day or later in the week and complete a bit more. Once you get started it’s surprising how much easier it can be to keep going.

The easiest way I have found to tackle many things is by spending just 5 or 10 minutes on a task. You’ll increase your productivity when you give yourself a time limit and it’s less daunting than needing to spend an hour or more on it and less excuse to procrastinate.

Putting off that pile of filing? Spend 10 minutes tackling the top of the pile or start to reduce the pile by sorting out all the papers that go into the same file or relate to the same subject. Repeat this at regular intervals throughout the day or set aside 10 minutes at the beginning or end of every day to do a little bit more or to keep on top of it.

Just do it! Putting something off like a phone call or an email? Instead of saying to yourself, ‘ I’ll do it in a minute, or I’ll do it later … do it now. Just go for it and get it out of the way and then you can move on and stop worrying. I find this technique works really well. Catch yourself putting something off and just do it.

Sometimes we put things off because something doesn’t ‘feel right’. How many times have you had a decision to make or something that needs doing and by delaying the need disappears? That’s not an excuse to procrastinate, just an indication to look at where the resistance is coming from and why.

When you procrastinate, what are you resisting? The more you resist the harder it becomes, so assuming the task is worthy of your attention in the first place, take action sooner rather than later.

If it’s worth doing – do it now! If it’s not, then just let it go and stop worrying about it.

The Motivating Factors of Procrastination

Procrastination is something that everyone is affected by periodically. For some this is simply a characteristic that causes a minor irritation. However, for others, it is an enemy that became so powerful that it assumed total control of one’s life. These people got to the point where procrastination completely paralyzes them from taking any action. Even though the desire and incentive are there, any forward progress is immediately destroyed.

Why do we procrastinate? Basically there are two factors that prohibit people from taking action. All activities that are put off will typically fall into one of these two categories. The main reason why people procrastination are laziness and fear. They are behind anything that is delayed without valid reason.

Before going any further, it is important to note that just because laziness is a factor for procrastinating, it does not mean that the person is lazy. Many people are extremely active yet are affected by procrastination. There are instances when one is just plain lazy. The desire to lounge around is greater than the motivation to get things accomplished. This is nothing to fret about if it is the occasional occurrence. It is when this feeling is an overriding tendency that issues arise.

The difference in motivators seem to be in the scope of the activity being put off. If the activity is relatively simple to complete, there is a great chance that laziness is the cause for the delay. Activities such as doing the dishes, mowing the lawn, doing laundry, and getting the oil changed in the car are all tasks that are easy to complete. They are things that most people know how to do. Thus, if the time and money are available yet the action is still being put off, then laziness is the reason.

For instances like this, a case of the Nike Slogan is needed. “Just do it” will enable you to handle these tasks. Unfortunately there is no great secret to getting yourself to take the action and move forward. You are more than capable of completing the activities. The way to combat laziness is to get moving. Action overcomes the inertia that exists in that moment. Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to work out once you actually are at the gym? The hardest part is motivating yourself to get going.

Actions that are put off for the reason of fear are a completely different matter. These items usually are a little larger in scale. They are actions that we believe have a dramatic impact on our lives. Just the act of thinking about them sends us into a rapid state of fear. No matter what we try, we cannot got ourselves to take action. Our mind convinced us that to act will have negative consequences upon us. This leads us to stall until we are out of options.

Unfortunately, there is not a magic formula to overcome our fears. However, there are a multitude of techniques that can be applied which will work in most situations. It all starts with realizing that fear does not exist. Read that again: fear does nor exist. It is a figment of our minds. The mind utilizes this technique to protect itself from uncertainty. Fear is some thing that you cannot hold, nor can you touch it. Yet it has the power to stop a person from taking any action.

In The Ultimate Procrastination Handbook, I set out a number of ways surmount procrastination due to fear. The most effective technique I found is to get yourself a procrastination partner. This is someone who will help you handle those activities which you put off. The simple act of having someone that we are accountable to works wonders. It is much easier to talk ourselves out of something as compared to someone else. People who used this found their productivity increase astronomically. With another, our power to succeed is magnified greatly. There are some who believe that the combined talents are not doubles, but, rather, have an eleven-fold increase.

Monitor which factor is causing you to delay doing something. Once the motivating force is determined, applying the proper action will allow you to overcome 90% of what you put off.

How to Stop Procrastination From Holding you Back

Most people think that procrastination is just an annoying or funny habit. They might joke that they have a mile-long to-do list or a stack of books that they never get around to reading. Those examples would be a very mild form of procrastination – but it can get much more serious than that.

Procrastination can destroy your life if you let it. It can cause financial problems, relationship problems, health crises, and more.

The causes for procrastination are numerous, but here are three of the most common ones:

1. Believing a task will ‘take too long’, so you keep putting it off until you have more time.

2. Believing a task will be too difficult, so you keep putting it off until you feel ready to handle it.

3. Waiting for a ‘better time’ to tackle a task, such as waiting until you’re not so stressed, or your life circumstances have quieted down, or waiting until you have less demands on your time.

Have you ever procrastinated because of these reasons? Most people have. But the problem arises when:

1. You never have more time.

2. You never feel ready to handle it.

3. A better time never arrives.

What then? The task never gets accomplished, and conditions continue to get worse as time goes on.

There is one simple way to deal with all three of these procrastination habits: do a little each day!

One major theme runs through all three of those causes above, and that is that you don’t believe you have what it takes (time, ability or resources) to complete the whole job. And maybe you really don’t. But can you do SOME of it? Can you work on it for a few minutes at a time?

In most cases, the answer will be yes.

The greatest way I’ve ever found to overcome procrastination is to push myself to get moving on something – even for a few minutes. I’ll set an egg timer for 15 minutes or so, and promise myself that I can stop after that if I want to.

Once the 15 minutes are up, however, I no longer feel the need to procrastinate. I’m making progress and feeling good about it.

Try it yourself and see the difference!

And remember, procrastination cannot hold you back if you make it your mission to take action – even if only for a few minutes each day!

For many people, procrastination is a way of life. While it is difficult to pinpoint just why people may procrastinate, but there is not doubt the havoc it can wreak on goals and dreams. When people procrastinate, they are often putting off something that will most certainly benefit them, but for some reason they expend more energy putting off the task than what they would need to actually do it. This is not only a bad habit, but also a tough habit to break and it is one of the primary reasons that many people never achieve their dreams.


Procrastination is an easy way of delaying goals and dreams for a later time. They may be goals and dreams that you would like to see come to fruition, but something is holding you back. Perhaps you harbor an unconscious fear of failure or fear of change that can be even stronger than you r desire for success. However, if you want success and you want it badly enough, you must face your fears and make to decision to start, whether immediately or at a designated time, and begin doing the things that you have been putting off all this time.


The quickest way to get started is to follow these steps:


* Make a list of the things that you need to do but have been putting off. You may even have a “to do” list already drafted.


* Find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted for about 20 minutes. Review each item on your list and record your reason or excuse for not completing that task. List legitimate-sounding reasons as well as the really lame ones. Don’t worry about how it will be resolved, just write. Be honest.


* Review your list and write down any benefits that you may enjoy as a direct result of the procrastination. Look deep, you are obviously receiving some type of benefit from the procrastination, or you would not do it.


* Now question the validity of those benefits. Is it really all that great? Do those reasons really make all that much sense?


* Make a plan that you can and will stick to and no longer put off. This is the time to make a “to do” list that you will actually do. Make a list of things that you will do to make your dreams a reality, then prioritize them, putting them in the order that you will do them.


* Give each task an estimated date for completion. This date may be flexible or fluid since as your situation changes, your needs may change and the completion dates may shift up or back.


Procrastination can wreck your plans to make your dreams come true. As you take steps to stop procrastinating, understand you will need discipline to make it happen – and to make it stick. If you have been spinning your wheels and are stuck in a rut due to procrastination, maybe it is time to put your nose to the grindstone and make some serious changes in your life. The only way to make your dreams come true is to take action, so get going!
