The Power Of Procrastination – OutWill It!

Well, if the title looks like an oxymoron, it depends totally on your viewpoint. You can either consider the power to procrastinate, or the power to overcome it. Truth is, its the very reason why some people sit on the back seat of the car, while others drive it for him.

I guess the habit of procrastination starts when we go to kindergarten, or rather don’t want to until our parents kick us out o f bed… and follow that off with college, where we bunk the first period, and so on and so forth.

Frankly, in my still young career of online marketing, or programming, for that matter even for washing clothes, if I had to point the number of reason for personal failure at any point of time, it had to be procrastination.

Truth is if an study is done, I bet an entrepreneur, has more reason to procrastinate than an employed individual. You see as an entrepreneur, you control and give your own reasons, as an employee, well the time starts ticking away your paycheck, as soon as it hits nine a.m.

Procrastination by definition is -
Putting off or delaying or deferring an action to a later time.

It is the humane and human ability to see, and remarkably justify the saying :-
“What you can do today, do it the next day”

Lethargy is a part of what makes us, us, and you can’t take that away. What you can do is command its hold over you, so that you don’t keep shifting that article you had to write, or the letter you had to answer or the video you had to make to an infinite future and beyond.
I am not exactly writing a book on it, but I will try to squeeze in some tips on the control part in this article.

First and foremost remember that old saying :-
Procrastination is the thief of time.
—Edward Young (1683–1765)
And we all know how much time is deposited in our vaults at midnight am every day.

We procrastinate because you don’t want to do the job : I confess, I delayed writing this article. Well I love writing, and I love what I write, but before actually taking up the pen, or the laptop in this case, there is a suspended period when I can think of a 100 reasons to delay it. The same applies to my workout schedule. Before entering the gym I could probably raise myself a fever, just to stay at home. But once inside, once the grind starts, once you sweat it out, sweet victory.
I love the outcome. And that is what you have to focus on.
Stop thinking of the trouble, stop thinking of the grind, stop thinking of ‘I can just do it tomorrow…’
Envisage what your result is, and focus on that. Tell yourself what the possible outcome of this delay will be, and how it will negatively affect you. Remember by putting-off you are just wasting another minute, another hour, but eventually you have to do it anyways. So a delay could possibly cause you a loss in money, time, energy, goodwill, and if you have enough bad luck, maybe a million dollar deal! (Touch wood.)

Eat the Frog : Sometime ago I read this very interesting idea. And no, you don’t actually swallow a frog. What it propounds, is imagine a situation where the first thing you have to do in the morning is swallow a flog. Everything else throughout the day, would seem like a piece of cake…literally. So when you set down to work, think of the toughest, most horrendous, dis likable work you have in your TO-DO list and than as Nike said it “Just Do It”.

Prioritize what you need to do : This is not an advice, an idea, or a suggestion. This is such a well know quote, it is probably an idiom or saying handed over from time unknown. You need to prioritize your tasks, everyday. And than set about striking them out every time you finish it. I have a TO-DO list for my computer related activities. When I finish a To-Do, I give myself a treat, by watching one of my favorite music videos. That gets me ready for my next task as well.

I don’t have time for this : Well here is a universal truth. No one has time for anything, you just have to make it. Heck, I don’t have time to sleep, but I carve it out of my 24 hours, and make it happen.(I am a workaholic). Point is, unless you stop getting distracted while at work, and get your act together, giving yourself specific time periods to get your tasks done, you will never have time to keep up a TO-DO list. You time management goes for a toss, and its a domino effect that follows.

Well that’s some of the pointers from my personal side. Hope that brightens you up a bit, and if you really like it, follow it.

Avoid Procrastination With These Simple Steps

Many of us suffer from an undiagnosable condition called procrastination. We procrastinate with everything; we put off what we could do today until tomorrow. Then, when we get to tomorrow, we procrastinate and put it off until the next tomorrow. Fortunately, you can avoid procrastination by following a few simple steps.

The first thing that you can do is to start budgeting your time. Think of all the things that you have to accomplish over the next few days and prioritize them. Think of how nice it will be to get everything done that needs to be done. Look at what the most important task on your list is and just go at it. Once you finally get that one tasks done, do not stop to celebrate. Instead of taking a break, go right into the next task.

You can avoid procrastination by avoiding breaks in between tasks. Most of the time when we finish one thing we will stop to take a quick break that will actually turn into a very long break. When that long break is done, we do not feel like returning to the next task.

You can also stop putting things off by planning your days in advance. Before you go to bed each night, you can pull out a piece of paper and make three columns. Prioritize the most important tasks in the first column, then the less important tasks in the third column. Finally, put everything else in the middle. Work out an exact schedule of when you will be getting the most important tasks from the first column done during the next day. After they are done, mark them off and the next time that you make your list, you can replenish the first column with tasks from the second column.

Time management is the answer to procrastination. Just plan out your days and you can stop putting things off right now… or tomorrow if you would rather.

Procrastination is a dirty habit, and I should know, it was my first vice. Before I discovered how hypnosis could be used to break a habit, I absolutely had to put things off until the very last moment. In order to stop procrastinating, I had to understand my own goals.

In understanding those goals, I was forced to come to terms with how to realize them–by getting the work done so I could get that feeling of satisfaction and assurance that comes with doing a job right!

Stop Smoking: Break the Habit with Hypnosis
Quitting smoking is the same as changing any other behavior. At first, it might feel awkward to change an old behavior or to learn a new one. But, with a small amount of time and repetition, and a good measure of diligence, the new behavior becomes as natural as the old.

Procrastination Slows You Down

Procrastination can be the reason you don’t make it through many tasks throughout the day. You might find you get drawn into a television show or playing on the Internet. When you look at the clock the day has gone by and you haven’t completed any of your work. This lack of productivity will cause you to be very unmotivated.

Procrastination can be damaging. The effects can also be damaging if your procrastination causes problems with your work life, personal life and more. Putting things off are a serious problem for many people and you need to get the ball rolling.

Many people are very aware they procrastinate but they cannot get out of the funk they are stuck in. You can. It is common to sit around and think about how things could be or how things will be. You might have a project you need to complete and sit around and think about doing the project but never get started with it. You might meet deadlines at the last minute. This doesn’t make anyone feel good about themselves.

If your motivation is lacking on a project you might consider changing the focus to something else that needs to get done. If you have a paper due and you cannot get focused don’t sit in front of the computer and play. Find something else around the house to get done and then go back to get the paper done. Starting another task may give you the momentum you need to get rolling with the project you need to get done.

Procrastination can be very damaging. You might be aware or unaware of the procrastination you suffer with. However, you need to pay attention to the time you spend sitting around doing nothing. When you can beat procrastination and you become entirely productive you will be very positive about life. You will also be motivated to take on new projects too because you will be spending less time sitting around.

Lifelong Procrastinator Needs Help Today… Not Tomorrow

Does anyone else out there suffer from severe procrastination? I need help.

There, I said it. “I need help.”

I know it’s an AA thing where you stand in front of an audience of your peers and admit you need help, but maybe it will work here, too. Admitting that I need help with procrastination may be the first step in finding a cure.

I attended a Zig Ziglar seminar in the mid 1970′s and I was totally sold on the method of goal setting he was promoting. I bought all the materials he had for sale that day.
After that, I practically memorized the tapes – yes, they were tapes, not CDs or podcasts. I nearly wore out two tape recorders.

I also filled in the workbook with all my desired outcomes for the next year. I wrote everything down that I could think of, including weight loss, financial gain, spiritual enlightenment, and the attainment of marital bliss. I think I forgot to write down that I needed to cure procrastination.

Then, as all of us who have this severe problem do, I put it aside.

Oh, I thought about it each year at the New Year celebration. And I even lost a few pounds every couple of years. But I am a helpless mess right now. I know I need help with procrastination.

One of my very favorite Ziglar quotes is that “if you keep on doin’ what you’re doin’, you’ll keep gettin’ what you got.” I absolutely believe this with all my heart.
But, guess what? I keep puttin’ off what I know I need to do in order to get something different.

“Maybe I’ll start tomorrow,” I tell myself (and my wonderfully understanding wife), but tomorrow has not gotten here yet.

What’s a fella to do?

I used to listen to this radio station that had nothing but motivational speakers 24/7. I got a bunch of great quotes from listening, but not much action. However, I do recall a guy named Jim Rohn saying time after time what he learned from his mentor.

Mentor? Maybe I need one of those? Could a mentor help cure procrastination?

Anyone out there willing to be a mentor?

I remember doing my college essays, the night before they were meant to be in. I only panicked the night before. It was only the fear of being told off, that got me to do my essay.

But things are a lot better now, thanks to using EFT to cure my own procrastination. It can be the same for you, if you haven’t already stopped reading and really want to change.

There are big costs to procrastination. Health is one. Just over the course of a single academic term, procrastinating college students had such evidence of compromised immune systems as more colds and flu, more gastrointestinal problems. And they had insomnia.

You can’t study about stopping procrastination.  You have to do something to stop procrastinating

The Number 1 Reason Why You Procrastinate is Fear.

You imagine what might happen, not not will happen.  With EFT you can remove all fears from doing tasks that you don’t want to do. You can get over the boredom and make any task fun.  All tasks seem to become manageable when used with EFT.

You are not lazy because you put off doing tasks. You think that something bad will happen.  It very rarely does.

Help With Your Priorities.

EFT can help you priorities your to do list.  Do you have so many things going on that you actually don’t do anything?  You can spend too much time, doing nothing, then beating yourself up over it.  EFT can help you eliminate tasks that are unimportant.

Task Overwhelm.

Using EFT you can alleviate task overwhelm.  Often when have set yourself a goal, stop yourself from achieving that goal because deep down, you think it is an impossible task.  So you don’t even start it.

Time Management.

You have too many tasks.  You don’t know which ones to do 1st, so you end up doing none or them.

Lack of Motivation.

There are some times when you just don’t want to do anything. By using EFT you can find out these and there root causes and either do the task or realize that it is not that important and drop it. There by releasing some of the stress and tension that you have put on yourself.

Overcoming Procrastination In 5 Simple Steps

Overcoming procrastination can be one of the hardest things to do since the people who need to do this the most always delay in taking action. Procrastination is a serious example of an ‘epic’ lack of motivation which the longer it is allowed the more deeply rooted it becomes.

This ‘social disease’ can be and is the ‘killer’ of many dreams and goals. The only and most logical cure to be found is learning to how to better motivate yourself to take the necessary actions.  

Discovering how to stop procrastinating can be broken down into simply breaking old and often times psychologically based habits. Here is a simple 5 step plan to help you overcome your lack of motivation and take charge of your life once again.

Sort and Prioritize

One common reason for procrastination is due to the overwhelming feeling you can get from having too many things that need to be done. This feeling can severely hinder your ability to motivate yourself. The problem can be handled in a logical manner by sorting out your ‘to do’ list. By prioritizing them into a workable list according to their urgency, time deadlines or overall importance you now know where to start.

Simplify Tasks

Some ‘undertakings’ may be intimidating due to the enormity of the goal itself. Something like this typically involves many steps and/or tasks to be completed before the goal is reached therefore it is common for people to put it off. The best approach for this is to break this goal down into a series of steps and focus only on the immediate task at hand. The result will be since your focus isONLY on the immediate task you are not allowing the size of the overall project to intimidate or overwhelm you.

Peak Performance Time

Everybody has got a particular time of the day or night that they find themselves the most productive. This may be due to your energy level or perhaps a there are less demands upon your time. It matters not what the reasons are just determine when it is the easiest time to motivate yourself and schedule time to complete some of those tasks you have been putting off.

A quick note here and something to be consider with any of these steps is perhaps only schedule a little at a time. As you begin to see results it will be easier for you to motivate yourself to tackling even larger tasks or goals. With results comes confidence and a surge of energy to accomplish even more.

Schedule the Time

We spoke of scheduling some tasks during your most productive hours and that should give you the added energy or ‘edge’ to make some progress. Well a ‘spin’ on that would be to take a task and simply schedule it into your ‘work’ day for completion like any other item you may have scheduled for that day.

By incorporating it into the ‘routine’ of your day you are NOT allowing it to build up the psychological barrier that develops when it is repeatedly ‘put off’ till later. This barrier builds up a lack of motivation and a feeling of dread. By scheduling and completing it within the course of a busy day its seems easier since no barrier or dread has a chance to build.

Just Do It!

Sometimes it works best just to grab an assignment or unfinished task you are not too fond of and simply complete it without any prior ‘dread’ or anticipation. As I mentioned earlier our lack of motivation offer stems from a psychological barrier and it is normally one we create ourselves. The more we ‘dread’ something the more dreadful it actually becomes and this feeling is something we create.

Overcoming procrastination is simply a matter of breaking old habits and restoring your lack of motivation to accomplish even the smallest of tasks. Learning how to stop procrastinating draws parallels with learning how to motivate yourself since motivation is the root of the problem. The simple 5 step plan reviewed above targets restoring your drive. By ‘chipping away’ at these old habits new ones can then be developed. The results will allow you to once again become the ‘pilot’ of your life instead of simply a passenger along for the ride. This will now put the goals and dreams that have eluded you in the past back within your reach.
