Strengthen Skills in Time Management

Article by Tony Robinson

We want to strengthen our skills in time management, since it is essential for a successful life. College students are very aware of time management, yet many of the students struggle to maintain a productive level of time. Since, most students attend classes, work a job, search for time with families and friends, and strive to find time for their own needs, time management is an ongoing effort. If most of these students went to class with a positive attitude half of their time would be spent wisely.

If you have very little experience with managing your time, it might be wise to do a little research, or else talk with a professional that is experienced with time management.

If you are employed, you might want to find someone outside of your business that can support you and help you learn time management skills. The reason you would go outside the business is that studies have shown that many businesses both small and large often struggle with time management. Plans are the steps to setting up a time management scheme, but we must realize that plans can, will, and has failed. Regardless, who is putting a plan in action there are always changes. Someone outside of your business can be more open-minded, looking at the problem objectively and help you to get on track again.

If you are planning in your business, this is positive; however, you must realize that disasters are a reality. Setting your priorities straight is also important to a leading time management scheme. When you set priorities and work hard to achieve your goals, you are then strengthening your skills. College students are often struggling, simply because many of them procrastinate, or have difficulties in a course and refuse to ask for help.

Alternatively, they are too busy worrying about other things outside of college, including entertainment, which distracts the mind. Therefore, we can strengthen our skills by looking at the situation and realizing that distractions are a mishap waiting to happen, and refusal to ask for help, is a road to disaster. Procrastination is not an option if you are striving for success. Procrastination waste time and energy, and only adds up the tasks you already had on your plate.

If you are planning a date, don’t sit at your desk worrying about what you are going to wear, rather get on your feet and get your work done first. When you go on that date you will find yourself more relaxed and your date will thank you since they probably worried all day what they were going to wear. We all have shortcomings that prevent us from achieving our goals.

The key to strengthen your time management skills is to move those obstacles within out of your way, so you can run over the obstacles outward head on without complications. Do not procrastinate, do not worry, do not avoid your responsibilities and you strength and success will enhance tremendously.

Time Management Progressed

Article by Tony Robinson

In order to develop a time management scheme that works with our intended goals, we have to learn some of the basic layouts in planning time management. To develop a successful time management scheme we must evaluate time and calculate it against time. In other words, we must sit down and ask our self how long does it take us to eat?

How long does it take us to complete a task? How much time are we wasting? Are we spending quality time with the most important people in our lives, or are we spending our quality time on things that do not matter. Where our time goes is essential since time management is the process of gaining flexibility and cutting back time. As you can see, life is a game of loose and gain.

Even in time management, we are gaining something and loosing something, but the advantage of time management is that we are loosing something that brings us rewards and gaining something that brings us bigger rewards. It is a no loose situation if we plan time management right. Let the game begin!

Ok, you start you morning out with a healthy breakfast and going off to work with a positive attitude. When you get to work, you have your list of things to do in front of you, your desk is clear of clutter, and when you sit down and fire up that computer the machine is running smoothly…sounds too good to be true, but it can happen. If you look back in this paragraph, you will note I referred to “list of things to do.”

Time management includes making notes or lists of things that you are responsible for completing in a day. The list can start with smaller tasks and lead to bigger tasks. It depends on the person and what is expected of them, but for the most part, it is the process of elimination. When you sit down at your desk and there is a list in front of you, you already know what is expected of you. Therefore, you can just jump right into action and finish the task.

Notice I said FINISH the task. You should always finish one task before moving to another task, unless your job requires skills of multi-tasking. Once you finish the first task, you can move onto the next time and follow in pursuit. Once you completed all your tasks, sit back for a moment in a comfortable position and think of what you accomplished. When tomorrow comes, you will notice you do not have any backups, and that your day is running smoothly with new tasks laid out in front of you. Now, we can take a look at the computer. Your company is responsible to keep up maintenance on your computer, but you are responsible to notify the proper individuals when your computer is flopping.

If you computer is operating smoothly you know your time management scheme is flowing smoothly, but if you notice that your computer is acting like a limping soldier, then you probably noticed problems earlier and failed to tell the boss. Or, it could be that this is the day that you computer decided to let you know that someone wasn’t keeping up maintenance, or “you worked me too hard, I need replacement.” Whatever the case, someone was negligence, or both were negligence, which means your time is going out the door while you wait for the technician to patch up your computer, or else wait for the delivery man to bring in the box.

Time management includes making sure that things are running smoothly by maintaining your equipment, informing others when things go wrong, or upgrading when necessary. If you desk is clear when you enter your office, this should let you know that you are doing a good job, and motivate you to keep up the good work. You are saving time, since if your desk was cluttered you would be in your office early in the morning digging around for the list that your boss provided you. Now that you are on the road to time management progressed, you will next want to look at how you invest your time outside of work.

Basics in Time Management Questions

Article by Tony Robinson

We all have to find what works best for our individuality, since each and every one of us is different. Accepting our own actions, behaviors and thoughts is not the beginning of learning who we really are. Rather, it is an attribute, which follows a connection between our past and our futures. You heard the nonsense “never look back?”

Well, the people that are telling you this are in a big office basing their ideas, theories and guesses on experiences and lifetimes. Hypocrites need to pluck the needle from their own eyes and quite advising others, since obviously the plans they make rarely work. This acceptance starts with the basics in managing our time. The basics in time management are setting up goals and plans that are obtainable. When we set goals for our selves we must ask…”Is this goal obtainable. Do I have the ability to achieve this goal?

How do I plan to make this goal successful? Asking questions then is one basic element of diverting a time management scheme that works smoothly. Asking for help is another basic element in time management that leads to success. Success is the greatest reward that life has to offer us.

No one knows it all, so sometimes we have to ask for help. When you are asking questions, you are letting others know that you have a goal and you are searching to obtain that goal by seeking out a solution. When we question our selves, we are performing a therapeutic technique that helps us to find answers to unanswered questions. For example, if you are getting married in July and it is January, you may want to ask yourself is your timeframe suitable? Does the timeframe work with your schedule? Am I ready for this?

Do I have the ability to manage a marriage? If you see where I am going, it is obvious. Many people commit to marriage, but often neglect elements of time management, that are essential for making the marriage work. Time and money is invested in this arrangement and often wasted, since the marriage leads to divorce. Likewise, if we are starting a new business, we have to ask questions. Questions are the root of establishing a time management scheme that leads to success. Don’t let pride get in the way of obtaining your goals. Pride is a root of evil and it does not bring forth good results when utilized inappropriately. Maintaining pride brings us to ‘keeping it simple,’ which is another basic rule in time management.

Keeping it simple is smartest element in time management since it works to benefit our mind, body, and responsibilities. Simple does not mean to be simple minded, neglecting your responsibilities. Rather, simple means to put a plan in motion that works smoothly and effectively, while reaching for your goals. One example of a simple plan, is when problems arise it is often because someone made a mistake, unless nature is in the picture. If we are making plans to obtain goals, then we want to analyze carefully which strategies work best to reach that goal.

We want a plan that is logical and simple; so that it informs us which steps to take next to reach our level of success intended, without feeling doubts or running into complications constantly along the way. No plan is flawless, so keep in mind when you are creating a plan for time management “role playing” can often decrease risks in plans. This means when you come up with an idea for your planning scheme, you would ask questions, play out the part, and focus on the results.

If good results come from the actions or decisions, you know then that the plan will run smoothly. Life is too short to waste time, and time is wasting money, so learn the basics in time management so you can reach your goals. Time manages everything. No matter what we do in life, it all revolves around time. We can spend time wisely and get results from our efforts, or we can waste time and sit back wondering what happen to our lives?

Team Efforts in Time Management

Article by Tony Robinson

Family and co-workers are a part of the team of people that you should include in your time management plan. When you promote confidence and motivation to your team, you are taking the first step in making your plans work. Time Management is essential in any success strategy planned. If you are not into cramming, rushing, or failing it is wise to get ahead by setting a time management plan that includes each person that works around you.

If you have family time, management is important since you do not want to neglect the people you love the most. This is part of your team, and when they are neglected, you are affected. When you are planning a time management schedule, it is wise to include all details of your life into the plans. For example if you are making a list of tasks, then you will include sleep, waking hours, meals, job, family, entertainment, social, chores, travel, and so on. Try to avoid planning a task list that works against your schedule.

If you set a time in the day to eat a meal, then make sure that is the time you will dine. There comes time in our lives where we may have to modify our schedule but try to avoid this if, at all possible. If you need to check off your list this is great for keeping up with a schedule. Checking off your list only assures you that your time management is working.

Another helpful tip is to determine what tasks take longer than other tasks. For example, if you work and are expected to handle a large project, be sure to take care of the bigger tasks and work down to the smaller tasks. By handling, the bigger tasks first will save you time, since the smaller tasks will be easiest and you can then find more time for your team members.

If you work as a team at your employment, then try to include your team in the time management plan as much as possible. When teams work together, there is always more time for other details that are needed to be fulfilled. You want to include time in for the family also. If you work long hours, you might want to cut back on the hours by getting your work done. Some of us tend to lax when we are working. Do not waste time chitchatting if you have work that needs to be fulfilled. Get the work done first. Teamwork is where it is at, since no one person can stand-alone. However to make team effort work, collaboration is essential.

Teamwork is essential when working out a time management plan. The key to success is taking necessary precautions to prevent communication leakages within a business. Teamwork that instills motivation and confidence is the primary focus of getting the plans in action. When you have confidence, and motivation, you have the primary keys to getting on the road to managing your time. Communication is an important ingredient that makes time management fall into place.

What Is Time Management?

Article by Ken Snow

Because each of us is unique and different, we have to find out what works best for us in our own ways. This path to this starts with the basics in our own time management. Basic time management is setting up goals and plans that are reachable.

When setting goals for ourselves we should ask…”Is this goal reachable? Can I achieve this goal? What do I do to make this goal successful? That is a plan that helps to lead you to success.

We can’t know everything, or do everything, so sometimes you have to ask for help. When you are asking questions, you are letting others know that you are seeking a solution to a problem, or attempting to reach a goal that you have set. By asking yourself and other questions, you are relying on your own fortitude, and trusting others.

In time management, the best way to get something done is by keeping it simple. Simple means to put a plan in motion that will work smoothly and effectively that will allow you to reach the goal you have set.

When setting goals, you should scrutinize carefully which strategies might work most effectively to reach that goal. You will want a plan that is logical and uncomplicated, but that takes into account that there might be setbacks along the way. Since no plan is perfect, keep in mind when you are creating a plan for time management that things could go wrong, so that you are not thrown off when there is a crisis.

The Necessity Of Time Management Skills

The Necessity Of Time Management Skills

Article by Vince Peters

There is no doubt about it, people in the 21st century are busier than ever. Many families have both parents working, if the family has two parents at all. The increasing number of families that live in untraditional situations means that even more attention must be paid to how time is managed, in order that an individual can equally balance the requirements of family, work, and personal time.

There are many downfalls when an individual does not possess or develop basic time management skills. A home based business, for example, depends on the amount of time invested in each project versus the project’s overall contribution to the bottom line in order to remain an effective source of income. If a home business operator is continually taking on projects that have a very low dollar-to-hour ration, then it is a good bet that the individual would be better off applying for a job with an already established business. Ineffective time management skills can not only cost you money in a home business, it can also kill it when you take on more than you are capable of handling, upsetting your clients.

One of the most important areas where time management skills are essential is within the family. People are becoming more and more aware of the importance of the early developmental years on children. For parents, factoring their kids into each day is an essential part of their development. A failure in good time management skills in this area will mean consequences that are serious and far-reaching, as Cat Stevens noted in his song Cat’s in the Cradle. There will come a time when most people will look back on their lives and wish that they had spent more time with their kids, and this look back is entirely avoidable if an individual invest in developing some time management skills.

In the increasingly busy world, it is also important that individuals take time for themselves, and include this in their time management planning. This area often includes time invested in building the personal relationships between established couples, in order to form secure and lasting relationships. Individuals must fit time to fit in their favorite pursuits for their overall health and sanity, and this cannot be done without effective time management skills.

One area that tends to get overlooked when it comes to time management is that of diet. It is so easy and convenient to go out and get a “meal” these days that many people will find that most of their eating is done from a restaurant or drive-thru. Effective time management skills are essential when it comes to planning out a healthy diet, as hasty eating can often lead to detrimental effects both on the health of the individual and on the pocketbook.

There are many areas, then, where effective time management skills are essential. These include the enhancement of the individual’s career and reputation, the overall health of the individual, and even the future outlook for a person. Investing in the proper tools to develop your time management skills now will mean a big payoff overall, now and in the future.

How to Choose Right Time Management Software

Article by Natalie Aranda

Setting up your own personal time management system ironically requires time for you to choose from the variety of time management software available for the different computer operating systems and portable devices. Depending on your particular time management needs, your computer time, organizer software and to do list software you can perform more easier or harder operations, as well as present different features.

To get the most effective time management software, you must also have a clear idea about what it is intended for. There are organizer software specifically designed for business use, but doing research you can find applications intended for personal time management at home as well. To do list software is more often used for household matters, but also great for technical issues at the office.

Time management software should meet your personal criteria, not only in accordance with your personality and lifestyle, but also from the productivity point of view. Some popular organizer software has as many features as you can name, but do you need all of them? The more features on an application, the more time it will take to learn all its functions.

On the opposite side, some to do list software is as elementary as any other program, which will probably save you money and time using your actual system’s notepad to make your notes. Procrastinating issues cannot be solved, but you can tackle them easier if you have the right time management software gathering all your tasks to do in a single system.

Personal time management systems should help you to place the right things in the right order and time, so you must make sure to choose time management software with intuitive navigation menus and features that do not complicate your life. Instead of easing the stress of a chaotic list jotted down on any piece of paper or only saved in your mind, the common mistake that almost everyone does, that makes them miss important events.

The differences between organizer software and to do list software are the features of each one. To do list are basically an electronic pad with check boxes and date fields that let you write down assignments with their starting date, due date, then check off the box when they are done. More sophisticated programs include labels to assign priority levels, labels and even alarms ahead of time.

Although some to do list software include the ability to send a self-reminder via email, this features is more often found in organizer software, which includes a lot more features ranging from calendars to agendas and address books to make the personal time management a “piece of cake”.

8. Do not be ashamed to say no to a person if you unable to do it. It is something that you are honest with him. There are occasions wherein you will be given additional courses, responsibilities of job, activities which outside your schedule. Try to examine carefully how relevant they are to you, before you decide to accept them.

9. The time wasted must be used properly for productive purposes. Are you aware that you spend so much time while commuting, standing in lines waiting for your turn, and waiting for your doctor, adviser or a friend.

Always bring a pocketbook so as to utilize the time which will be wasted. Take with you a minor assignment which could be done easily. You could use the time to make some changes in your planner and for self organization. With the additional number of minutes, you will be able to achieve more.

Time Management Training Programs

Article by Vince Peters

In the busy world of today, it is more and more important that individuals learn how to properly manage their times in order to maintain a healthy balance between work, personal lives, and family. It is beginning to feel as though there are just not enough hours in any day for all of the required jobs to get done, let alone the time to unwind for the sake of personal health. Fortunately, there are a lot of books and resources that have been developed in order to assist a person in handling their time accordingly. Here are some classes and resources I found while doing some research on the Internet, and what they offer in terms of time management hints.

The Seven Habit of Highly Effective People, a book by Stephen Covey. In this book, Covey offers some time management strategies as well as categorizing the different strategies available today. In another book, he also proposes a new category of fourth generation time management, which a difference in the matter of urgency and the importance of planning. The first generation is classified as go with the flow, and individuals practicing this method keep lists which are used as reminders, and any unaccomplished items are added to the list of the next day. The second generation plans and prepares for their needs, using appointment books, calendars, electronic devices. IT is about goal setting and preparation. The third generation spends time in prioritizing and preparing for different areas of time management.

Software: There are several software programs developed to keep track of time management that can be vital assistants to the small business owner and the large business employee alike. Track-It Light Time Tracking Software is available through Dovico. It is not expensive, and allows a variety of time entry, the ability to keep track of multiple projects, and does not take up a lot of your computer’s resources because of its light format. Responsive Time Logger Time Tracking Software has an interface which allows a user to jump from project to project and also allows you to manage your time from a Palm device.

Courses: There are hundreds of courses available to help train people to manage their time better, and they are available both online and through educational institutes as well as through government programs as might be found at an employment agency or retraining office. Many businesses will also offer their employees training sessions on utilizing time efficiently. These courses are a great opportunity to lessen the stress in your life and harmonize your experiences by helping you to more effectively balance the different areas of your life.

There are several different ways in which the individual can learn to better manage his or her time. For some, reading a book might be enough to set them on a stress free path where deadlines are always met and personal lives are perfectly balanced. It may be better for most individuals, however, to take advantage of as many different resources as possible.

Common Time Management Errors to Avoid

Common Time Management Errors to Avoid

Article by Jeff Casmer

There are more strategies available for better time management than there are seconds in a month, and new methods are being introduced daily. While the effectiveness of any single “system” may be difficult to discern, it is clear that there are some behaviors one should avoid when trying to maximize his or her efficiency. We may not always know the best way to handle time, but we certainly know a few things to avoid. Let’s look at two common time management errors to avoid.

It’s all about Will Power

It’s easy to tell ourselves that the only thing standing in the way of better time management is increased discipline. If we could only be tough and dedicated, we say to ourselves, we could avoid wasted hours and redirect them toward productive pursuits. All it will take is a supreme act of will.

That mode of thinking has ruined more efforts to improve time management skills than one might believe. Here’s why: the will is invariably weak. Our humanity is formed, at least in some measure, by our inability to resist temptation. It is certainly shaped by our tendency to embrace and reinforce habits. Trying to wish away those traits with a bit of will power is unlikely to produce results.

Yes, dedication is important. Success, however, is far more likely when that commitment is accompanied by a removal of time-wasting temptations and other concrete steps to make a fall from time management grace less likely.

The Danger of Precision Timing

Many who embark on their first effort to improve their time management skills begin by constructing daily schedules. Mere “to-do” lists are inadequate. They feel the urge to plan their day and their actions to insure maximum efficiency. That intuitive strategy can actually be quite disastrous.

When things run long or when an unexpected happening occurs, the tightly-constructed schedule doesn’t yield. It simply becomes more crowded and the list-keeper’s unwillingness to accept the fact that life doesn’t comport to a schedule results in things not getting done on schedule. Soon, one is a few days behind schedule with little opportunity to catch up. Often this precipitates a decision to give up on better time management.

One should never put too much faith in will power. Nor should they expend too much effort trying to list out every project with a precise time limit. Both of these errors will quickly derail a time management improvement activity.

You may not be certain which time management strategy will fit you best, but you can be sure that avoiding the twin pitfalls mentioned herein will increase your chances of effectively taking control of your life.
